The 5 Most Popular Living Room Wall Colors

Choosing the right color is extremely important in any room, but what happens when you want to choose something that’s both in fashion and suitable? Well, to simplify things, let me show you which are the 5 most popular living room wall colors.

The eternal wall color “problems”

Whenever we plan to redecorate a certain room, the wall color is definitely the first thing we think about. And there’s no surprise, as it’s one of the most visible aspects of every room, no matter how well decorated this would be.

The 5 most popular living room wall colors

Obviously, one of the most common questions I always receive is “Which are the most popular living room wall colors?” and to be honest, this question is driving me crazy. What does it matter which colors are the most popular, why don’t you ask me “What color would you recommend for my living room?” or “How do you think my living room would look with a certain color?”.

Well, the truth is that most people are only interested in having a fashionable living room, instead of trying to find the suitable color for it. And that’s a totally wrong perspective, which I’ll never agree with, but they want an answer, so I have to obey and give it, right?

That’s why, in this post I will present you which are the 5 most popular living room wall colors, along with advice and information about each trend, and whether it would suit your own room or not . In this way, I hope it will be easier for you to understand why you should choose a certain color and why you should avoid another one, no matter if it’s the most popular or not.

TREND NUMBER 5 : White is always a classic

Although it’s definitely not the most appealing color you could choose for a living room, white is actually quite popular among people who love classic styles, so this brings this color on the 5th place in our top.

The 5 most popular living room wall colors

  • Why should you choose it?

White colored living rooms will always look simple and modern at the same time, thanks to the atmosphere this color creates. That’s exactly why so many people choose white as their main color for the living room, as it doesn’t have any matching rules and it’s suitable for any kind of furniture.

  • In what kind of living room would it look best?

Personally, I can’t say I’m a huge fan of this color. I do agree that it would be perfect for a minimalist room, where we need simple, solid colors and shades, but for a normal living room…Well, to be honest, I wouldn’t recommend it. Minimalism requires a lot of free space, which would look great with a white background behind, but other styles that have many elements need something more vibrant than simple white.

The 5 most popular living room wall colorsSo if you want a white living room, try to decorate it in a minimalist or modern style, with few items in the room and a lot of space. In this case, white would definitely be the best choice for your living room.

However, everyone has the right to choose whatever he or she likes better, so white would be a great option if you like classic and simplicity. Moreover, your living room will probably look extremely elegant with a simple, white background.

  • Furniture pieces that would look good in a white living room:

As the room is painted in white, it’s important to choose stronger shades for the furniture and the other decorative elements. Some furniture pieces that would make the most of a white room are the Steve Silver Table and the Sauder Storage Tower.

TREND NUMBER 4: Brown for all dark color lovers

This is a more and more popular choice among people who dislike light, simple colors and want to have a living room decorated in a strong, brighter manner.

  • Why should you choose it?

You’ve probably seen that black isn’t the most suitable color for a living room, bright violet is quite out of fashion and strong green would be pretty hard to match, so if you prefer dark colors, what options do you have left? What do designers recommend you to choose?

The answer is simple: go for a dark color that does all these things the others don’t. Choose a color that would be normal for a living room, would remain fashionable in the next years and would be easy to match with the other elements. And the only one that does all these is brown.

A brown living room would add a lot of personality and warmth to your house, so it would be the perfect choice for people who are independent and have a strong will. However, you can choose brown even if you aren’t all these but you just want a living room painted in a strong, bright color, that would add interest to your living room.

  • In what kind of living room would it look best?

The 5 most popular living room wall colorsBrown is definitely not my favorite color for living room, but I admit that in certain cases it could be a great option, especially because this trend is here to stay. That’s why, consider this color for your living room if you like natural shades and outdoor color schemes.

If you want to go for a dark brown, make sure your living room isn’t very small, as this color would only make it seem overcrowded and tinier. If this is your case, choose a lighter tone of brown, which would look much better.

On the contrary, if your room has average or larger dimensions, a darker shade wouldn’t be a problem because it would keep your living room simple and elegant, without making it look too large or too small. And that’s one of the reasons why brown is one of the 5 most popular living room wall colors.

  • Furniture pieces that would look good in a brown living room:

As brown is already a pretty strong shade, there’s no need to bring in more color. So light colored pieces like the Bobkona Vanity are the best choice in this case.

TREND NUMBER 3: Different shades of orange, but they all brighten

When you think about orange, what’s the first thing that crosses your mind? In my case, it’s joy, serenity, freshness. All these sensations make me feel happy, calm and full of life. And from what I’ve seen, it’s not just me.

  • Why should you choose it?

Orange colored walls have the ability to add a lot of sparkle and warmth to any room, making it feel like home, no matter where you are. This is why it’s the perfect choice for a living room, especially if you’re a sociable, friendly person and you want to feel surrounded by happiness all the time.

Orange adds character to a room, that’s obvious. And if we’re talking about a living room, it’s even better because after all, it’s the most important room of the house, so making it look unique should be a priority.

  • In what kind of living room would it look best?

The 5 most popular living room wall colorsSo, how does a living room have to be so that you can go for orange walls? Well, there isn’t a certain criteria, but it’s important that your room has decent dimensions, and by this I mean that it’s not incredibly small.

Except this case, I think orange would look good in any situation. Of course that it matters what exact shade you choose, but mainly, it wouldn’t have any reason to look bad.

To give you a better idea of what kind of orange you should choose, I can only tell you the brighter the shade is, the more energy it will bring, so keep this in mind when you choose the right color.

  • Furniture pieces that would look good in an orange living room:

This is a lucky situation, because orange is a very bright color, but it’s also light enough for darker pieces. So if you have an orange living room, the good news is that you can use either light or dark furniture (like the Coaster dining table), it’s up to you.

The bad news is that you can’t use both; you have to decide if you want lighter pieces, or dark colored ones. If combined, the orange living room would immediately lose its freshness and energy and would become a room full of random colors.

TREND NUMBER 2: Turquoise is the best relaxing ally

You probably agree with me that looking at a turquoise item will immediately make you think about the sea, waves, sky… I don’t know how it feels for you, bu for me that’s really refreshing.

  • Why should you choose it?

This is the reason why more and more people choose to pain their living room walls in turquoise. This color has the incredible effect to calm you down, make you relax and forget about all the problems you have.

That’s why it’s one of my top recommendations for a living room, because most people come home hoping to forget about all the issues from work, school or anything else. Unfortunately, many times it’s exactly the opposite, as they end up thinking more about those and stressing out really bad.

The 5 most popular living room wall colorsAnd that’s exactly why a turquoise living room exists. I’ve asked many people with different shades of turquoise in their living rooms and they all told me they love this color because of its great ability to make them relax.

So now I’m wondering, is it just a coincidence or is it something real? I guess it’s the second option rather than the first…

  • In what kind of living room would it look best?

The great thing about turquoise is that it is perfect for any kind of room, whether it’s very small or very large. The only difference would be the shade you choose, as a lighter one would look better in a small room and a brighter one in a place with larger dimensions.

But mainly, if you want to make your living room a relaxing place, go for turquoise, no matter what dimensions your room has. I really recommend it as a living room color, because except its great ability to help people relax, it’s also extremely stylish and modern, and from what I see, it’s definitely going to stay in fashion for the next years.

  • Furniture pieces that would look good in a white living room:

Turquoise painted rooms look best when they have brown furniture associated to them, so I recommend you a medium brown coffee table like the Emerald Cocktail Table.

Another color that designers recommend for furniture in this case is white, but to be honest, I’m not a huge fan of this idea. Turquoise is not a very strong color anyway, so if we use white for the furniture (white is already a very very light color), the room will look rather boring than beautiful. That’s my opinion…

TREND NUMBER 1: Neutral colors will always amplify

This is one of the most important rules of home design, so in case you didn’t know it, make sure you remember it next time you want to decorate.

Many of you may not be sure what I refer to when I say “neutral colors”, and some may even misunderstand it. That’s why, please remember that NEUTRAL COLORS AREN’T ALL SHADES OF WHITE. Not at all, I don’t even consider white as being a neutral color.

It’s pretty simple actually: neutral colors are very light, simple, don’t grab the attention and are many times called “pale colors”. The best examples are yellow, beige, light orange, grey and others that don’t have a strong visual effect.

The 5 most popular living room wall colors

  • Why should you choose it?

Now I bet that you’re really wondering how can these “boring” colors be the most popular living room wall colors… You are, am I right? 😉

The 5 most popular living room wall colorsWell, the answer is quite simple: because neutral colors have the ability to draw away the attention from them on the other elements of the room, so they are perfect for small, narrow places, that need to be enlarged.

A small bedroom, a pretty narrow kitchen or even a tiny living room, they could all be amplified with a neutral background.

That’s exactly what makes them so popular, because they’re definitely not the most appealing choice for a living room.

  • In what kind of living room would it look best?

This question goes hand in hand with the previous one, because it’s important to see why you need a certain color for the walls and whether it would suit you room’s design or not.

The 5 most popular living room wall colorsA room colored in a light, neutral color will always seem more spacious than it really easy, that’s why these colors are one of the top recommendations when it comes to living room. The good thing is that you don’t necessarily have to have a small living room, as neutral colors are a great option for a larger room too, allowing you to add a lot of items without overcrowding it.

However, they still remain the best solution for small rooms.

In my article Small living room decorating ideas I talked more about this topic, so if you want to read more about it, just click there.

But as a conclusion, neutral colors are the most popular choice for wall colors (not just for living room), thanks to their ability to create a wider space and a more comfortable atmosphere. So if you have a small living room, don’t think too much about it and go for a light, neutral color if you want to take full advantage of your space.

  • Furniture pieces that would look good in a white living room:

Just like in a living room painted in orange, there is a great freedom when it comes to choosing a color for the furniture.

I would say around 90% of regular furniture colors (like black, brown, white,…) would look great in a neutral living room, just because the decor isn’t overcrowded and there is enough room for each furniture piece to shine.

So if you have this color in your living room, you can consider yourselves lucky. If you don’t have it…well, you should get it. It will give you a great freedom for furniture and decorations, and you’ll only understand how valuable this thing is once you have it in your own room.

To sum up

Choosing the most popular living room wall colors should depend first of your room’s design and dimensions, and only after this, of your taste and preferences.

However, if you want to paint your living room walls in a color that will remain fashionable, take a look at the trends: neutral colors, turquoise shades, bright orange tones, dark brown and white are very popular in these days. You’ll see that most of them are suitable for almost any type of living room, so you have very high chances of success. 🙂

    Hi there,

I’m actually in the process of buying my first condo. I have been looking at many options in furniture and what colors. The walls are white and I am looking at a light color theme. I was wondering if I should paint the one wall behind where I want to put my TV. I am conflicted about what color. What would you recommend?

    • Anne says:

Hi 🙂 I would recommend you to go for a neutral shade, like beige, light yellow, turquoise or something that isn’t very strong. This kind of color would always look good, no matter what furniture you choose.

However, if you prefer bright colors, orange would be the best choice.

Yes, I actually advise you to paint the wall behind the TV too, it wouldn’t look very well if you let it white. 🙂

The colour of the walls in a room make such a massive difference. Changing the whole atmosphere of the room. Like they say that blue walls are good for calmness and focus, so it works well in schools. Orange is a nice fresh colour, which is nice for kitchens.

I love the brown walls. Very sophisticated and unique!

    Thanks for the interesting read.

I’ve been studying Ayurveda for the last 10 years and it teaches color therapy.
Exposure to different colors can be used to help the body heal and stay healthy. If a person knows their constitution, then they can choose the colors that create balance for them and they will naturally feel good in their home. Sometimes people react to being in a room and they don’t even know why. It never occurs to them that the color they chose is not supportive to their well-being.

I’m so happy i found your website as I’m about to paint the inside of our home. Thank you!

    • Anne says:

Hey Jackie, thank you for your kind words! 😀

What you’re saying is so true, it depends from person to person how they react to a certain color, so the ones I presented here are pretty general. Just like you said, you can never know for sure what color would make someone feel perfect. But it’s all about trying it.

      Thanks for reading my article.
