How To Choose A Bedroom Carpet In 4 Steps

The bedroom is one of the most important rooms of any house, so making sure it looks just like you’ve always been dreaming should be a priority. You may not realize it now, but the carpet really is one of the defining elements of any bedroom.

Giving the importance of having a perfect carpet in your bedroom, in this article I want to show you how to choose a bedroom carpet in 4 simple steps. It’s a pretty simple thing actually, as long as you follow these tips, you have no chances to pick the wrong carpet.

Many people spend a lot of time figuring out what kind of carpet they need in their bedroom. And that’s no easy task. Although it may seem easy to decide on a certain type of fabric, there are actually a lot more factors to consider.

How To Choose A Bedroom Carpet In 4 StepsYou may have a weakness for thick piles, but you think such a carpet wouldn’t really look good in your bedroom.

Or you may love simple, soft carpets but you think one of these couldn’t blend with your furniture.

These are all facts that many people experience, so it’s important to make sure you are making the right choice. The texture your carpet has does matter a lot, not necessarily for how it feels (though, let’s admit that this is also a very important thing for everyone), but for how well it manages to integrate among your bedroom’s elements.

However, in case you don’t have any clear idea about what kind of carpet you would like to have in your bedroom, the best thing you can do is to follow the trends. These rarely mistake, and you have high chances of finding both the perfect carpet and having a fashionable bedroom.

My article Top 3  Bedroom carpet trends for 2015/2016 will give you all the answers.

So, before you do anything else, decide on what kind of carpet you want and make sure it’s the right choice for your bedroom.

Once you’ve decided the color your carpet should have, it’s time to move on to…guess what? The color.

How To Choose A Bedroom Carpet In 4 StepsThat’s another key element when it comes to the success of a carpet, simply because a wrong color can destroy the entire charm of a carpet, no matter how luxurious or stylish it looks.

Now you’re probably thinking: How could I choose the perfect color for my carpet? Is there a rule I should follow?

The answer is: YES, THERE IS.

The main thing when choosing a color for your carpet is to make sure it’s not too bright or too strong for your room, in comparison to the other elements. This, unless you have a pretty dull room and you want to make your carpet the accent point, of course.

But this thing rarely happens, so in most cases, it’s important to choose a color that is AT MOST as strong as the other ones. I advise you to choose one that is considerably lighter, but if that isn’t possible, then choose a color that is at most as bright as the colors of the other pieces.

Let me give you an example. Let’s say we have a bedroom painted in a strong red, decorated with a lot of neutral colored furniture.

Obviously, the red walls will necessarily become the focal point of the room, and as red is a pretty strong color, there won’t be need of anything else.

The furniture has a neutral shade, which doesn’t really grab the attention, so everything is good, we’re not visually overcrowding the room.

And what about the carpet? What color do you think it should have?

Well, if you’ve taken a look at the paragraphs from above, you will probably know that there’s no need to go for a strong color, as we already have the red walls. The lighter the carpet, the better. And considering that we also have neutral furniture, we can go for the same shade in carpet too.

What do you think, does it make sense? I say it does. So remember this rule every time you have to choose a carpet, not just for your bedroom. This rule can apply everywhere, and it’s really simple to follow it.

Okay, so now that you know how you want your carpet to look, it’s time to get to more serious stuff and deal with some “economic” issues.

How To Choose A Bedroom Carpet In 4 StepsMany people skip an essential step when they buy a carpet, and that is…the quality.

That’s right, all of us are tempted to look at the color, at the texture and at the price, and if these 3 are suitable for what we want, then this carpet is perfect.

Unfortunately things aren’t really so. I know a lot of people who did this and they ended up with a really low-quality carpet, that got dirty easily and looked really used after just a few months. It looked great at the beginning, and the price was also good, so how could those people know that it would become so bad?

Well, there is a really nice tip that you can use when you buy a carpet: the warranty. I’m not sure if you know, but carpets tend to have a pretty long warranty, between 3 to even 10 years, so you shouldn’t expect having problems with them for a pretty long time. This, of course, if you bought a high-quality one.

How To Choose A Bedroom Carpet In 4 StepsAnd that’s how exactly you can know what you’re buying: take a look at the warranty or ask for it, if it’s not shown anywhere.

There are a lot of manufacturers or shop owners that don’t show this feature, just because many people aren’t interested in it.

But once you see the warranty, you can tell if the carpet is worth buying. As I said, if it’s at least 3 years, then that carpet is a pretty safe deal and is usually worth buying.

Remember that producers know what they make, so if you come across a carpet that has 1 year warranty, just let it go. There’s no point paying for something that won’t last for too long.

I know this may sound silly, but another typical mistake many people to is to buy a carpet that is either too small or too large for their bedroom.

This happens because a lot of people think they know if a carpet is suitable or not, just by looking at it. In other words, they know how large their bedroom is, so obviously they will also know how large the carpet has to be, without measuring anything.

But that’s totally wrong. You many have the feeling that you know, but you actually don’t, it’s just an illusion. How To Choose A Bedroom Carpet In 4 Steps

What you actually have to do is to measure the dimensions of your old carpet, or if there isn’t any, the dimensions of the space where you want your carpet to be. If you do this, there’s no way you can choose the wrong dimensions for your carpet.

So next time you want to buy a carpet and you have the impression that there’s no need to measure the space, let go all your ideas and measure it. At least, you’re sure you can be wrong.

How To Choose A Bedroom Carpet In 4 StepsIn case you’re now convinced of the importance of having a perfect carpet in your bedroom, try to remember these 4 tips every time you want to buy a new one.

Once you’ve selected the right texture, choose a color that would be lighter than the other pieces’ colors. In this way, your carpet will most likely blend perfectly with your decor and it will look extremely natural.

Before you purchase any carpet, make sure you know the right dimensions it should have, or you might have some pretty bad surprises. As long as it has a long warranty, it’s probably the right product for you, and you have very high chances to have chosen the perfect carpet for your bedroom.

Hi Anne, thanks for the great tips and advice for how to choose a bedroom carpet. It was great for me to find your page, because we need to get a carpet/rug for our bedroom.

At the moment we have a wooden floor with no carpet, and just like the photo in this page, the wall is red so I’d like to get a plain beige one, do you think it’s a reasonable choice?

Also I didn’t know about the warranty, I’ll definitely keep an eye on it, as we tend to choose cheap ones and ruin them within a year or two.
Thanks for the great informative page.

Hey Ray, I’m really happy I could help 🙂

About your bedroom, yeah, if you have red walls you won’t probably need any other accent piece, as red is a visually strong color. So the carpet should be very light, and beige is in my opinion the best choice when it comes to color.

And yes, please look at the warranty before you buy anything. 😀
