5 Stylish Decorative Pendulum Wall Clocks For Living Room

Decorative pendulum wall clocks for living room

Whether you have a luxurious living room or you simply want to make your room an elegant, charming place, some decorative pendulum wall clocks for living room would be a great idea, that would bring you a few extra points when it comes to originality.

However, keep in mind that if you want a high-quality, elegant object, you’ll have to pay for it, so don’t expect to find a pendulum wall clock at $15.

Anyway, there’s no point exaggerating, the prices are not extremely high, and there are enough options for all types of buyers, so if you think it would be a good idea or if you simply want to find out more about this type of clock, keep reading. 🙂

Though getting a pendulum wall clock for your living room has probably never crossed your mind, maybe it’s time to reconsider the idea a bit and think about the advantages such an impressive piece would offer your home.

  • Great historical tickle sound

First of all, you should know that this type of clocks are by no means old-fashioned or useless, how you’re probably thinking the first time you hear the word “pendulum wall clock”. On the contrary, they are very effective and work very well, especially because you’ll definitely have no problems hearing that ticking sound, that for me is impossible to forget.

In case you’re sick of the usual alarm sound that is so common for most clocks, you’ll surely love hearing this classic, storylike ticking that will immediately grab your attention, without getting on your nerves. That’s what I call a cool ticking sound. 😉

  • Stylish and luxurious decoration

In the previous paragraph I also mentioned another word that people think about when they hear of pendulum clocks, and that is “old-fashioned”. I want to clarify this thing very quickly by asking you a very simple question: “If you went to an ordinary living room and see a pendulum wall clock there as a decoration, would you think it old-fashioned?”

Decorative pendulum wall clocks for living roomNo, you wouldn’t. On the contrary, you would see it as extremely elegant and stylish, simply because it’s something you don’t find in every house. And that would make the living room unique.

So whenever you have a doubt about any unusual element you’d like in your house, ask yourself that question and it’ll be much easier to decide.

Coming back to our decorative pendulum wall clocks for living room, as I already said, their main purpose is to add character and significance to a room, making it look both luxurious and antique. And that is not something very commonly seen in a living room.

  • No need for electricity

As you probably know, pendulum clocks have been used since antiquity, so electricity has never had anything to do with their mechanism. A pendulum works in a very simple way, you only have to wind it with a key from time to time and it will work by itself, no matter if there is electricity or not.

So, in case you live in an area that is inclined to power outage, a pendulum clock would be more than a perfect idea.

     1. Longcase (Grandfather) clock

Decorative pendulum wall clocks for living roomProbably the most famous type of pendulum clocks, a Longcase clock is that tall timepiece we see in old movies. Maybe you think that’s the reason why it’s also called “Grandfather clock”, but there’s a different story in reality, if you’re curious you can read it here.

Anyway, though until the 20th century it was considered very effective and was an ordinary piece in most houses, in the last decades Longcase clocks have been replaced with their smaller descendants.

Decorative pendulum wall clocks for living roomHowever, a Grandfather clock brings elegance and a lot of class to your living room, transforming it into a crossing gate between the present and the past. This type of atmosphere would be perfect for a living room decorated in a Victorian style.

Anyway, this doesn’t mean that you can’t use a Longcase clock as a decoration if you don’t have a very luxurious living room, not at all. It only means that it would match a Victorian decor better, but this isn’t always necessary.

I have seen many common living rooms that had a Grandfather clock as a showpiece and they all looked amazing, that clock didn’t give me the feeling that it didn’t belong there.

So, this kind of pendulum clock is perfect for a living room that wants a bit of charm and antiquity at the same time, but remember that it will also impress your visitors, so get ready to hear a lot of compliments for your good taste and inspiration. 😉

     2. Grandmother clock

pendulum wall clocks for living roomThis time I’m sure I know what you’re thinking: If a Grandfather clock is a very tall one, a Grandmother clock must be the same antique type of clock, but a bit smaller.

And that’s right, that’s exactly how it is. For people who love longcase clocks but think that one of those would be too big for their room, there exists another type of longcase clock, called Grandmother clock. This one doesn’t have a long story behind, like the Grandfather clock, but it does have all the charm and beauty of this one.

Which makes it the perfect choice for a small living room, especially if you want to have some mighty decorations that would immediately grab your visitors’ attention. And as you probably guessed, it’s also cheaper than the original longcase clock, so this could be important if you don’t want to spend a fortune on a decorative item.

Overall, I think it’s a good choice considering the arguments from above, so if you want a pendulum wall clock, think about this type.

     3. Quartz clock

Decorative pendulum wall clocks for living roomEven though the name doesn’t sound very familiar to you, quatrz clocks are definitely something you’ve seen before.

These are the classic small clock you see in many elegant living rooms that aren’t decorated with very expensive items. That’s why they are some great decorative objects for all types of living rooms, because you can find both luxurious, unique pieces and affordable, but still elegant ones.

If you want a classic pendulum clock, perfect for a smaller living room or if you simply prefer a lighter fashionable clock, a quatrz clock would be a great choice.

Quatrz clocks are a bit different from the other pendulum clocks, because some of them can work with batteries, instead of keys that have to be winded. This makes them a bit more modern, so if you’re not a huge fan of antiquities, a quartz clock would be a much better choice.

pendulum wall clocks for living roomHowever, the biggest advantage of quatrz clocks is their price. As I mentioned before, there are quatrz clocks for all types of buyers: if you can’t afford to spend a huge amount of money for this kind of decorative object, you can find cheaper ones, that don’t look bad at all, on the contrary, they could totally change your living room’s appearance. In case you want a more luxurious one, there are still plenty to choose from.

I totally recommend you this type of pendulum wall clocks, because of their great appearance, good prices and the wide range you can choose from. So if getting a decorative pendulum clock is something you’re thinking about, quartz clocks should be the first things to look at. 🙂

     4. Cartel clock

Decorative pendulum wall clocks for living roomThis is a slightly different type of pendulum wall clock, because it is much smaller than a classic one and its main purpose is to impress by refinement and excellent taste.

If we look at its history, we will see that it was a very common piece in wealthy houses from Europe in the 18th century. In order to impress by luxury, people would order cartel clocks executed in fire-gilt bronze and decorated with gold.

Decorative pendulum wall clocks for living roomHowever, a common characteristic of cartel clocks is their asymmetry, as they generally have a cartouche shape and are always hanged on the wall.

There are a lot of cartel clocks available even now, some kept in good conditions from many years ago and some made recently, for pure decorative uses. It’s true that their prices are quite high, but if you really want such an art object, you’re probably prepared for a bigger cost.

So, a cartel clock would go very well with a luxurious living room, but if this isn’t really a term that could describe yours, then I don’t really advise you to spend so much money for a decorative object, there isn’t any point. Remember that a cartel clock is made to impress, and it could do so only associated with other luxurious pieces.

     5. Ogee clock

pendulum wall clocks Although it’s probably not the most beautiful decorative clock you’ve ever seen, an Ogee clock is a great object for giving your living room a bit of personality and appeal.

Despite not being extremely expensive and luxurious, Ogee clocks are some of the most common American antique clocks found in antiquaries’ homes. They are designed in a pretty simple way, thanks to their Gothic influences, which means that they are the perfect decorations in a living room designed in this style.

However, there is no rule about placing such a pendulum clock in your living room, and by this I mean that it doesn’t have to be decorated in a certain style or manner, the important is to match the other decorative elements and it will surely impress. 🙂

In my opinion, these 5 are the most important types of decorative  pendulum wall clocks for living room, as they are the most common, but also the most suitable when it comes to appearance and accuracy.

In case you haven’t found one that you like between these 4, you should know that there are also Banjo and Act of Parliament clocks, but they don’t offer anything new regarding design or appearance, as far as I believe.

To sum things up, if you’re looking for an object that would give your living room a feeling of distinction and elegance, a pendulum wall clock would be the best choice. However, remember that you get what you pay for, so make sure you afford this type of decorative object before you write it on your shopping list. If you do, the only thing left to do is to go give it a try. 🙂

I never knew about all the different types of clocks out there! And wow, how beautiful all of them are.

This really took me back to when I was a little girl. One of my friend’s parents had a grandfather clock that used to tick loudly in their hallway. In the beginning it woke me, but after a few nights the sound became soothing.

Haven’t seen one of these in houses in a long time. Great to see a site that brings back these old classics!

    • Anne says:

      Hello Andrea 🙂

Yes, I totally agree, they’re gorgeous and they can totally change a room’s appearance. Thanks for reading my blog.

    Hi Anne,
My grandparents on both sides each had pendulum clocks when I was growing up. I can still hear the chimes. A comforting sound. I would love to be able to get a nice grandfather clock. Perhaps this gives me ideas for when I buy that home that it will look just right in!

    • Anne says:

Hi Robin, you’re right, it’s a really comforting sound. Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll manage to get that house one day 😀

I love that you put pictures of all the clocks. There are are many to chose from. It so funny I never heard of a grandmothers clock and now I have to have one. For my upcoming anniversary. I love all the clocks but the grandmother one it so pretty. My living area is big but we have a big fireplace that is wide and grandmothers clocks look wider and will take up a little more room on the wall I think. It looks less likely to fall over to me. I like wide stuff for some reason and not the taller skinny looking ones.

    • Anne says:

Hahaha I guarantee it’s not going to fall over you, no matter if it’s a grandmother or a grandfather clock.

Grandmother clocks are definitely really beautiful, and if you prefer wider and smaller clocks, they’re a great option for you.

I hope you get a gorgeous pendulum clock for your birthday 🙂

    HI there my friend.

Lovely site, and ever so unusual to hear people recommending pendulum clocks these days. I totally agree with you that they add a degree of style and , class to a room, especially a grandfather clock, very elegant indeed.

I can certainly see your talents as an excellent interior designer

    • Anne says:

Hi, thank you so much 🙂

I totally agree with what you said about pendulum clocks, they can change the appearance of a room easily.

  7. Tami says:

    Hi Anne,
There is such a magnanimous presence to the grandfather clock, it always makes me think of Jane Austen novel or Downton Abbey. I would have never thought of it as a decorative piece but you made me think of how I would add it to my style. I think combining classic pieces with contemporary ones makes for a very sophisticated look. Especially in all white rooms the wooden color would be a great and classy contrast, a wall clock can look very stylish as one of the pieces of a living room gallery wall – combined with prints and canvases. Nice idea, thanks!

    • Anne says:

Hey Tami, I’m so glad my article helped you get some new ideas about pendulum clocks.

Yesss, I definitely agree that they would look so good in a white room, with some modern pieces around, the feeling would be so stylish and glamorous at the same time.

Thank you for reading my blog, I hope you’ll find useful stuff here from now on too 😀

    Hi Anne,

It was such a pleasure coming across your blog! Hardly anyone talks about pendulum clocks any more so it’s really nice you’re reminding people that they will never go out of style! 🙂

They sure bring back memories – and I love all the pictures you chose! I have never heard of some of the different styles. Each style has it’s own distinct features and I think they’re a work of art! The detailed craftsmanship on some of them is so beautiful!

I live in a tiny condo but if I had a bigger home, I would certainly invest in one!

    Best wishes,

    • Anne says:

      Hi Anna, thanks 🙂

You’re right, pendulum clocks bring a lot of originality and style to any room, and they’re definitely worth investing in.

Thanks for reading my post 🙂

My grandparents’ place had a grandfather’s clock. I believe the general ambience of a place is a big factor in which clock to get. My grandparents place was quite old. In another relative’s place, the house was elegantly designed and the grandfather’s clock also had a place there.

At my apartment, however, a grandfather’s clock would look slightly out of place because it’s not old looking or elegant. In addition, I have little kids who wouldn’t think twice about destroying one! We use a simple round quartz clock.

    • Anne says:

Hi Regina, I have to agree with you, a very modern home, decorated in a Minimalist or Industrial style would definitely not be the best place for a grandfather clock.

Just like you said, a Quartz or even an Ogee clock would blend much better in that type of apartment like you have.

Thanks for letting me know your opinion:)

  10. Ray says:

Hi Anne, thanks for the great information about pendulum wall clocks. I think I like grandmother’s clock. In fact I’ve actually seen grandfather’s clocks, but never heard of grandmother’s. Yes a grandfather’s clock would be too big for my living room, so something smaller will definitely sit nicely. I guess they’re quite loud too? And a lot of time adjustments to make periodically?

    • Anne says:

Hey Ray, thanks for your comment 🙂

You’re right, grandmother’s clocks are a much better option in some cases, especially if you don’t have enough space/money for a large pendulum clock.

They’re not extremely loud, but it depends on what exactly you understand by “loud” 😛

For example, they normally tick at a certain hour, but there are some that you can set to remain quiet or just not to be that loud. Though I couldn’t recommend you a certain model, I just heard there are some pendulum clocks of this type.

Regarding the adjustments you have to make, in my case I didn’t have to do it very often. I remember I adjusted the clock right after installing it and then it was working well for a long period, it didn’t need anything else. But in case there are some problems, you can adjust it again, I don’t think it’s that hard.

Thank you for reading my blog, I hope my answer helps 🙂

I just recently discovered your website, and I really like it. It seems that you really want to help people and put a lot of effort into your posts, I appreciate it!

The grandfather clock looks amazing and luxurious. But the price is probably high as well. How much do they cost?

    • Anne says:

Hey there, thank you for your kind words 😀

It’s true, these kind of clocks are very elegant and beautiful, and the price is similar many times. There are a lot of grandfather clocks who cost thousands of dollars.

However, I’ve also seen some that have a great price, around $300. I know that’s hard to believe, but it’s true. 😀 Now of course that the quality isn’t probably the best, but at least the aspect is great and I’m sure it should last (at least) as long as the warranty claims.

      I hope this helps.

Thank you for the article, in my opinion these are the best clocks for a living room.

I have had a wall clock which is small and doesn’t have a stand, but now i got the a similar wall clock to these ones. The best advantage of this pendulum wall clocks is that they don’t need electricity to operate. So I’m really satisfied with this clock that I have now.

So do you think these clocks are always the best choice in a living room, no matter what furniture you have?

    • Anne says:

Hello, thanks for your opinion, it’s good to hear you’re a pendulum clocks lover, considering that they’re not as popular as they once were.

Regarding your question, I don’t usually recommend these clocks in a living room, because they’re usually pretty expensive and they need a lot of care. So I think they remain a good choice for people who want an elegant room with collection pieces, and they afford to pay for these kind of items.

So for a regular or modern room with furniture pieces made of common fabrics, I don’t necessarily recommend these pendulum wall clocks. Of course, unless you really want one, I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t look bad.
