8 Stylish Bedroom Curtains And Drapes Ideas

Bedroom curtains drapes ideasWhen decorating your bedroom, there are a lot of things to take into consideration, and one of these is definitely the curtains you choose for your bedroom windows.

Curtains are so important for a bedroom because they are one of the focal points of the room, and one of the first things you see when you enter the bedroom. Though it may seem a bit difficult to find some good, stylish bedroom curtains and drapes ideas, it’s not that hard actually.

There are millions of ways in which you can decorate your bedroom, and the only condition is that you also choose some suitable curtains, that will match the other elements of your bedroom.

If you agree with me about the importance of well-chosen curtains in a bedroom, you might be interested in seeing some bedroom curtains and drapes ideas, that you could use as a source of inspiration for your future bedroom decor.

But before taking a look at these ideas, I want to remind you some things to consider before choosing the right type of bedroom curtains or drapes.

Tips for choosing the right bedroom drapes

  • Neutral colored curtains will last longer

This is because of sunlight, that will make strong colors fade much faster than lighter ones. Of course that if your bedroom is located in a part that doesn’t get much light, choosing a neutral color shouldn’t be a necessity, as a bright colored drape won’t fade very quickly.

Bedroom curtains drapes ideasBut if your room does receive a lot of light, you should really consider going for a lighter shade. Besides, neutral colored curtains tend to blend much easier with any other elements, no matter what color these ones have.

If you’ve read some of my other posts, you may remember that this thing with neutral colors is not only available for curtains, but for many other elements from other rooms.

So, if you’re unsure about the color you want for your windows drapes, I really advise you to pick a lighter color, like beige, white, pale pink or others similar, they will make your bedroom look fresh and light.

  • A heavier fabric will prevent the light from entering

Bedroom curtains drapes ideasAs we’re talking about bedrooms, that’s quite an important aspect, because waking up early thanks to the sunlight isn’t exactly what you want on a Saturday morning.

In a bedroom, it’s really important to have some heavier curtains, that will prevent the morning light from entering your room and waking you up at 6 am. Unless you actually want this, of course.

So, if you want to get rid of the morning light in your bedroom, some good options would be to choose velvet, heavy silk or suede curtains, in other words, curtains made of solid, thicker materials. It’s true that these curtains will be a bit harder to handle, but I say your weekend sleep is worth it.

  • High hanging curtains will make the room seem taller

Bedroom curtains drapes ideasThat’s a great tip for people whose bedrooms are small and crowded. The trick is pretty simple, actually: the only thing you have to do is to hang your drapes higher than the window, making sure it’s still well covered.

You’re probably wondering “How high should curtains be hanged above the windows to give that sense of height in the bedroom?”, so I would say about 6-7 inches, that would be enough to create that feeling of taller room.

You can also hang them higher, especially if you want a striking aspect, and this will definitely attract all your visitors’ attention.

You can use this tip even if your bedroom is tall enough, because in my opinion, another thing it does is to create a modern, sophisticated atmosphere, that many people want in their bedrooms.

  • Simple goes best with patterned

Bedroom curtains ideasThat’s a pretty famous thing already, as many of you probably know that, in order to make a room look good, you have to respect its colors and patterns.

In other words, if your bedroom’s walls, furniture or carpet are patterned, you shouldn’t overcrowd the decor, so some simple, solid drapes would be the perfect choice. On the contrary, if you have pretty simple elements, patterned curtains would be a great focal point in that discreet decor.

That’s a really simple tip, and the only thing you have to do is to check in which of these two categories you fit into.

These are the most important things you should know before deciding on a certain type of curtains or drapes for your bedroom. Now let’s get to a more interesting part, some practical bedroom curtains and drapes ideas that could work as a source of inspiration for you and help you understand better what style of curtains you want in your bedroom.

As usual, I will try to explain you why I chose each picture and what I like about it, giving you some advice about how and where that curtain type should be used.

Bedroom curtains drapes ideas

That’s a classical picture of a small bedroom, whose real size is masked by the well-chosen light curtains. As I said, if your bedroom is smaller than your other rooms, there is not point trying to make it look sophisticated by using strong colors, simply because you have very little chances to succeed.

Actually, the best thing you can do is to decorate it using neutral colors, and the curtains are one of the elements that I’m referring to. If you look at this picture, you’ll immediately notice the light, soft curtains, that create a fresh atmosphere. They also manage to create the sense of more space, which is so important for this room, not to mention that they blend easily with all of the other elements.

As the window isn’t situated exactly in front of the bed, the penetrating light shouldn’t be a big problem, so a solid material isn’t necessary, it would only overcrowd the light atmosphere. That picture is the best example of  what drapes you should choose for a small bedroom, so if this is your case, use it as a source of inspiration. 🙂

In this picture we have a different approach, as the drapes’ colors are stronger and brighter. Just like I said before, in order to make curtains blend with the decor, you have to pay attention at the other elements’ aspect.

As an example, take a look at this picture. The dominant colors are rather light (pale orange, yellow) and there are some patterns on the bed cover and on the pillows. What does this mean for us? That the curtains we choose should have a strong color (because of the neutral colors from the room), but also a solid one (because of the patterns that already exists there).

So, if you look at the curtains from this picture, you can see that they look right in this way. That dark green is a strong color, that attracts the attentions and can be considered a focal point, but it is also a solid, simple color, with no patterns.

I insisted on adding this picture because I wanted to show you that improvisations could actually work amazing. This Rustic bedroom is probably not the largest one I’ve seen, so obviously it needed light curtains that would allow the light to enter and make it look bigger.

However, the problem is that the room is located in a part where light could penetrate easily, so this could be disturbing in the morning. Going for heavy, darker curtains instead of these light ones would be a solution, but then the “spacious bedroom” feeling we created would disappear immediately.

Then what could we do? It seems that by gaining space, we’re losing the possibility to get as much light as we need.

Well, here comes a very ingenious solution: placing dark, heavy curtains at the edges, that can cover the lighter ones and get rid of the unwanted light in the morning. The light curtains remain in their place, maintaining that space sensation in the bedroom, so we don’t lose anything. Also, the presence of those dark drapes doesn’t affect the atmosphere, thanks to the existent light curtains.

So, everyone is satisfied. 🙂 In case you have a similar situation in your small bedroom, this could be an amazing solution for this problem.

Another example that patterned works best with solid. I won’t insist too much on this picture, I think we’ve already talked about a similar situation in the second image, I just want you to notice the combination between the patterned elements from the room and the curtains’ solid fabric.

If this solid fabric was replaced by a patterned material, it would give the feeling of overcrowded room and it would be too much visually, so if you have similar patterned elements in your bedroom, stick with a simple curtain material.

Bedroom curtains drapes ideas

Though it’s probably not one of the most beautifully decorated bedrooms, I selected this picture because I wanted to show you what a difference some high hanging curtains can make.

When you look at this picture for the first time, doesn’t this bedroom look really tall? I say it does. But in fact it’s not really so, it’s true that it’s not a very small room, but it’s not a very tall one either.

The secret is the way in which the drapes are placed. As I said previously, hanging curtains higher than normal would make the room seem much taller than it is in reality, so I really advise you to take advantage of this tip if you dream about a tall, large bedroom.

Bedroom curtains drapes ideas

I don’t know if it’s because of the colors, but I really love these drapes and the way they blend with the original decor. This is a more special example, because the curtains are patterned and, as you can see, we already have some other patterned elements in the room (the pillows, but also the paintings, which have a lot of colors).

Normally, too many patterns would overcrowd the room, making it seem small and heavy. But this case is different because these drapes and the bedroom’s elements manage to blend together, thanks to the similar patterns and colors they have. I suppose they were designed together, as it’s pretty hard to find curtains and pillows that have the exact same pattern.

Even so, there is no way I can say they don’t match, so if you’re not a huge fan of simple, few patterned elements in your bedroom, this picture is the best example that there are alternatives for a more complicated decor.

To sum up

When buying curtains for your bedroom, before you make any purchase, you should keep in mind that you have to choose something that blends with the other elements, made from a suitable fabric and of an adequate color.

These are the bedroom curtains and drapes ideas that I’ve found and that I consider the most appropriate. I really hope you liked my selection and if you have any questions about this topic, please leave a comment below and I will gladly answer you. 🙂

I never really thought about how a curtain makes a room look until I read this article.

I always thought no one really paid much attention to them and as long as the color matched the color scheme in the room than everything was good.

I guess I will be paying closer attention to what type of curtains I put into my rooms from now on.

Hey, curtains are actually very important, I know many people don’t pay too much attention at them but in fact there are a lot of things that can influence a room’s appearance, and one of these are curtains. I really hope you found out something new from my article 🙂

Hi, Thanks for the post on curtain. I am a bit perfectionist while choosing curtains and your articles seams useful for me. Before buying a curtain, I am always checking all the colors on the particular room and according to them, I choose a contrast shade curtain. I must say, Curtain is changing the entire vision of the room.

    • Anne says:

Hey, I’m glad you liked it 🙂

Haha, it’s good to be a perfectionist, at least when it comes to curtains 😀 Yes, I agree, they definitely manage to change the whole room’s aspect.

Thank you so much for all this information! It is exactly what I was looking for. I just moved to a bigger house so I don’t have enough curtains anymore and they are often not the right size. So I was thinking about what curtains to buy for both my living room and bedroom.

My living room is quite small and low as well so your advice about putting the curtains a bit higher will definitely be put into practice! Also I heard you should make sure the curtains hang beside the windows and not in front during the day to let more light in and to make it seem bigger. So both I will do. But I was wondering what kind of fabric you would advice for a living room if I want to make sure that people are not able to look in the room in the evening?

For the bedroom I guess I’ll go for a natural light brown in a heavy fabric to make it look sophisticated and to be able to sleep on my free Sunday morning! 😉 Thank you so much!

    • Anne says:

Hi Adam, I’m really happy my article was helpful to you 🙂

Yes, hanging the curtains a bit higher and screwing them over, to let the light enter will definitely improve your room’s aspect and make it look larger.

About your question, it’s important to choose a thicker fabric, something like velvet, silk or any other material that isn’t very thin. You have many options here, so you can choose the one that has the best price and quality. Make sure you choose a suitable color that would match your living room, but I think this isn’t a problem. 🙂

A light brown, thick fabric would be great for your bedroom. I’m really happy to see my advice is useful to you, and congratulations for learning all these things so fast. 😀

Hi Anne you have a lovely website here.

I really loved this post, I needed some ideas about the curtains from my bedroom and I came across yours.

In a bedroom colored in light brown, do you think some patterned curtains would go well? I ask this because the walls are quite simple, so according to your post, patterned curtains would do no harm here, right?

    • Anne says:

Hey John, thanks for reading my blog 🙂

Yes, you’re totally right, in a bedroom like yours, painted in a light, simple shade, an accent pattern is a necessity, else the rooms risks to look… let’s say a bit dull.

And one of the easiest ways to add this accent pattern is by going for some patterned curtains, in a brighter color. Take a look at the other pieces from your room and choose the color according to those. For example, if you have many pieces in a violet color, choose a similar shade for the drapes.

The pattern can be any, you don’t risk to overcrowd the atmosphere.

I really hope this helps, and if you have any questions, please write me back 😀

    Hi there Anne,

My most preferred curtains for bedrooms has got to be blackout curtains like the velvet ones. In one of my vacation, I had the opportunity to sleep in a guest room that was decorated with this type of curtains and wow, the quality of sleep that I got was just amazing.

I never knew that blocking out lights that much could have such calming effects. Can’t wait to get a set for myself.

    • Anne says:

Hey Cathy, it’s nice to hear your experience, and it seems that this small thing really made a huge difference in that room.

Yes, preventing a partial entrance of the room could improve sleep a lot, and the best thing to do this is by adding thicker or darker curtains in your bedroom.

I couldn’t agree with you more on the fact curtains are better fitting with other furnitures in the room, bedroom in this case.

Thank you for this throughout post, now I know more on how to choose the best curtains for myself. I wonder though are there full bedroom sets with everything designed for you before hand (bed, curtains, furnitures etc.)?

    Thanks in advance!

    • Anne says:

Hey, thanks for reading my post 🙂

Hmm, I have heard of sets made of a bed and some suitable furniture pieces, but I’ve never heard of a more complex set, like one that would also contain curtains or other decorative items. This doesn’t mean there aren’t this kind of sets, it’s just that I don’t know and I haven’t tried any.

I love having dark curtains in my kids rooms so that during the summer we can block out the light and make their room dark. I don’t like sleeping with light coming into my bedroom either.

If I wanted to have light colored curtains but still wanted to block out all the light, what would you recommend? Where is the best place to buy curtains?

    • Anne says:

Hi Andrea, I totally understand your situation, I somehow experienced it too some years ago…

If you want lighter curtains but you also want them to block the light, the best thing you can do is to choose a thicker material, like velvet or any other, as long as it’s thick it will prevent the light from getting through.

When it comes to buying the curtains, personally I prefer to get them from specialized curtains or fabric shops, because it’s not like buying furniture or appliances. I mean it’s better to see by yourself what you’re buying, in this case.

      I hope this helps 🙂

This is a very beautifully designed post. The pictures are fantastic. Your website images are very inviting and homey, in my opinion, which is great for a post about bedroom curtains. Who doesn’t want to feel comfortable in their bedroom?

Do you recommend places where people can go to buy some of the materials mentioned in your ideas? Like curtains, drapes, rods, fabric, etc.?

    • Anne says:

Hey, thank you for your words 🙂

That’s true, the bedroom is one of the most comfortable places in a home, so it’s important to make it both look and feel comfortable.

Personally, I prefer to buy materials from shops rather than online, it’s better to see exactly how thick and long are the fabrics you’re getting, so I can’t really recommend a certain shop. I usually advise people to take a look at the fabrics and curtains from their local shops and choose from there.

There is a huge variety of fabrics nowadays, so I don’t think you couldn’t find something you want.

Thank you for reading my blog 😀

  9. Erika says:

You have some great material here (no pun intended). I may be more inclined to buy curtains for my naked windows now that I am more informed on what kind of curtains to buy. Sadly, only one window in my entire house has curtains at this time. Curtains can be expensive, but I think I would be more comfortable making a purchase after reading this.

I especially liked your photo examples and explanations as to why the curtains worked. Very helpful information here.

    • Anne says:

Hey Erika, thank you for your kind words 🙂

That’s right, curtains can give a totally different air to a room, so I really advise people to add curtains to their windows instead of just letting them empty. This can make such a big difference, but sometimes it’s hard to notice it before, that’s why I suggest you to say yes to curtains.

It’s true that some curtains are expensive, but I think there are some really affordable fabrics nowadays in many shops, so I guess this shouldn’t be a problem.

Thanks for reading my blog, I really hope you enjoyed it.

  10. Mellisa Anna says:

Thank you Anne for the wonderful post.

I live in a sunny country so I always choose high hanging dark curtains in my room so that I can block out the light and heat. However I also wish to have some bright curtains to brighten my room too and not allow heat to get in at the same time. Your post really helped me to make an idea about what I could choose
