Hello everyone! In this post I want to discuss the eternal problem of many furniture pieces’ shape. And today I want to begin with round vs. square tables.
I’m sure that at least once in your life, you had a hard time choosing a certain table for your kitchen. And I’m also sure that the main reason was that table’s shape:
“How would a square table look in my kitchen?”, ” What if it was round, would it be better?”. These are all questions that everyone must have thought about, at least once. And even though it doesn’t seem too complicated to decide between a round and a square table…well, it’s harder when you actually do it.
So that’s what I want to compare in this post and to give you a better idea in what situation you should get a round table and in which one a square table would look better.
Before I get started, I would like to mention that all these things that I will show you below are my own ideas and opinions, so you have the right not to agree with them. It’s my personal point of view, so I may be wrong in some cases and choose something because of subjective reasons.
So now that you know this, I think we can start. 🙂
1. Popularity- Winner: Square Tables
From what I’ve seen in the last couple of years (and not only), square tables seem to be more common in regular homes than their round competitors.
The reason? I’m not sure I can explain it properly, because I can’t say I know exactly which is the reason. But I will try.
I remember that when I was little, in my parents’ home all the tables they had were square. And it was the same in the homes of our relatives or friends.
Square tables were by far the most common, in fact round tables were pretty rare. I don’t even remember seeing a round table at that time, at least not in the home of someone I knew.
So in my opinion, the traditional reason is the most likely. We were so used with square tables that we see them as being the regular, normal choice.
However, I can’t say things are as they were in my childhood, when it comes to this. Round tables have also gained a lot of popularity, but not enough to overcome square ones. So if we talk about this, square tables are definitely the winners when it comes to popularity. And I don’t think this will change in the next 5 years… Maybe in the next 10, but I can’t say for sure.
2. Elegance – Winner: Round Table
If you’ve read some of my other posts, you probably know that I’m always crazy about glamorous pieces, so elegance is a very important criteria in every furniture items I talk about.
And when it comes to elegance, my pick are definitely round tables.
You may not agree with me here, but in my opinion, round tables have something that square ones don’t have: they manage to give the entire room a certain air, different of the regular one.
I mean, the whole room seems changed (in the good way :P) and it manages to look more luxurious that before, that’s how it always seems to me.
I had this feeling a lot of times after decorating a room. Every time I used a round table as a main furniture piece, it seemed like the room had a different air of elegance and glamour. And it’s not just about the air, because a lot of people agreed that round tables do beautify a room. So it’s not just in my head. 😛
Therefore, when it comes to general appearance and elegant look, I definitely go for round tables. So if this is the #1 criteria that matters for you, I really advise you to choose a round table for your kitchen. It would suit your style and wishes much better than a square one. 😉
3. Practical Use – Winner: Round Table
The last aspect that I want to talk about is the usability of these kinds of tables. And the main thing when it comes to this is their versatility.
For example, let’s say you have a 7 pieces dining set, which means a table and 6 chairs. Assuming you have more guests one night, it would be perfect if your furniture set would allow you to place more chairs to it. And in this case, a round table would be much better than a square one.
Just think about it. If you have a round table, adding some extra chairs to the corners wouldn’t make it look uncommon. I would actually say that those chairs would look like they belonged there, like they were part of the original set.
However, if your table would be square, placing chairs at the corners wouldn’t still look that well, would it? It would be so easy to notice that the chairs don’t belong there, and the whole furniture set would look like it was composed from 2 different sets.
You may not agree with what I said here, but I really advise you to try this. If you have a round table at home, try adding some extra chairs on the round corners and see how it looks. I bet it looks better than you expected.
So afterwards try doing the same with a square table, if you have one. The chairs wouldn’t look that well anymore, simply because the square corners aren’t made for extra chairs, like round ones are. So the result wouldn’t be as good as before.
I really advise you to try this thing, because it will make you see by yourself if what I say is true or not. And if you think it’s not true, I challenge you to write me and tell me more about it. I love to talk about furniture, and I don’t mind being wrong sometimes. 🙂
However, if you ask me, I say there’s a huge difference between round and square tables when it comes to their versatility ad practical use, and round ones are much better in my opinion.
So Round Or Square?
Round, that’s what I choose. And not necessarily because I like round tables better (though it’s true :P) but because they are much more practical and their have a much better look. That’s how I seem things.
And even though square tables are a traditional, regular choice for many people, round ones have started to become more and more popular too.
I can’t say I don’t like square tables because I recommended them many times, as they have their own beauty. And every case is different, so I can’t say that round tables would look much better in any kitchen.
But generally speaking, I think I prefer round tables. I would give them a 60% advantage, over the 40% of square tables. There’s no big difference, as you can see, because it’s pretty hard to make a choice between those 2.
But if I had to pick, I would say round tables.
What about you? Which would be your winner from round vs. square tables?
