In the following paragraphs I will show you some how to make your bedroom luxurious in 8 steps, without furnishing it with expensive items or decorations.
Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Well, read the following lines and you’ll see it’s not so.
Money are a huge problem of the 21th century, and this problem deeply reflects in the way we decorate our homes.
Each of us dreams about having the perfect house, with expensive doors and luxurious chandeliers, but for many of us, these remain just a dream because we would have to work a whole life to afford just a little part of all these.
But fortunately, there are some tricks we can use if we want a glamorous house without spending too much money. There are a lot of things to say so in this article, we’ll only talk about the bedroom.
8 STEPS TO MAKE YOUR BEDROOM LOOK LUXURIOUS
1. Choose a light color for the walls
You’ve probably heard me insisting on this advice in many other of my posts, but the truth is that in this case, a light wall color is the best thing to start with.
Why is that? Well, begin by asking yourself “What makes hotel rooms look so glamorous?”. The answer is very simple: they look so good because they seem extremely spacious and fresh.
Have you noticed that most of them are painted in lighter colors, like beige, pale orange, light green or other similar shades? Well, I have, and I think I have the explanation for this.
Colors that have a neutral, light tone manage to emphasize the furniture pieces and make the whole room look larger, more spacious. That’s something most bedrooms need, as they tend to be overcrowded and full of different things. And this is exactly the little secret of elegance: spacious rooms without too many useless things.
For this reason, choosing a light color would make miracles for your bedroom, transforming it into a much finer, sophisticated room. Unless you have a pretty huge bedroom, I really advise you to go for a lighter shade, and I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed with the result.
2. Add a large bed in the middle
Now that you are done with the wall color, it’s time to start with the furniture, and the first thing you should do is to make sure your bed is somewhere in the middle of the room.
I know that it is placed in this way in most bedrooms, but I also know people who prefer to place the bed tied to one wall, so that one side of the bed is completely tied to that wall. Just imagine how uncomfortable that would both look and feel…
This kind of approach would only overcrowd your room, making it seem much smaller than it really is. On the contrary, a bed placed in the middle would give the feeling of fresh air and space, so this is definitely the beginning for that luxurious atmosphere.
Besides this, as we’re talking about bedroom, it’s important to have a large, solid bed, that would give the impression of wealth. It doesn’t have to be a sophisticated or expensive one, the only thing that matters are its dimensions.
Also, in case I didn’t mention that before, I recommend you to go for a double bed, even if your bedroom is just for one person. A double bed will always seem more imposing than a smaller one, so it will contribute to your bedroom’s general aspect.
3. Unclutter the nightstands
This is definitely a common problem for everyone, as we tend to leave all kind of things on our nightstands. No matter if it’s something necessary or something we hardly ever use, there is enough place for it on the nightstand, that’s how we usually think, right?
Well, if you’re willing to change your habits for the sake of a luxurious bedroom, giving up your crowded nightstands is definitely one of the top things from the list.
I’ll get back to that illustration with the hotel room: What would you say if your hotel room had the nightstands full of different useless objects, that would have no place there? I bet you wouldn’t like it… Moreover, I think your opinion about that room’s luxurious air would change completely.
Just as you wouldn’t like a busy nightstand in an expensive hotel room, you should have the same opinion about your own bedroom. Although you will probably not have as many visitors here, it’s important to focus on maintaining that luxurious atmosphere you created.
For this reason, try to make some order and give up all the thing you don’t need on your nightstand. And by this I mean everything that doesn’t have a decorative purpose: books you started reading, cosmetics you left there, even the TV controller could be placed elsewhere so that it doesn’t make the nightstands too busy. I’m probably exaggerating with the last one, but you get the point. 😀
Remember that nothing is irreplaceable, so even the eternal reading lamps placed on the nightstands can be changed with some standing, more modern Mainstays lamps, that are also really cheap.
As a conclusion, uncluttering your nightstand will definitely improve a lot your bedroom’s luxurious feeling, so if you really want glamour, tidy up for it.
4. Go for a pendant light or chandelier
One of the very simple steps you have to follow for a luxurious bedroom is to change your regular light fixture with a hanging one.
Pendant lighting fixtures add a lot of elegance and class to every room, so they would be the perfect choice for a luxurious bedroom. Just imagine, a gorgeous crystal chandelier hanging on your ceiling will definitely be a hit for every visitor.
Moreover, lights that are hanged on the ceiling tend to make the room seem taller, giving that feeling of height to the entire room. And that’s another element absolutely necessary to an elegant bedroom.
Although you will be surprised to hear it, pendant lighting fixtures aren’t very expensive. Not even crystal ones, that look so luxurious. They actually have great prices, some are even under $100 or $50. Of course that the quality is probably not the best for those pieces, but you have a very wide range to choose from.
In case you’re interested in pendant lights, you can read more about this in my article ELK Lighting Pendant Lights Review, there are a lot of tips and product recommendations there. Or if you need a more “original” light, here is an example.
Getting back to our story, a pendant light would be the best choice when it comes to luxurious lights, so keep this in mind when you choose your future illumination source.
5. Long-hanging curtains make miracles
As we were talking about how important height is for a luxurious room, you should know that tall curtains are something you should take full advantage of.
Just like hanging lights, tall curtains manage to change the way in which we see the whole room, making it look larger and taller. In reality, the room’s dimensions don’t change at all, but it is our vision that changes.
I always advise small room owners to use this tip, but it’s something you can also use for elegant bedrooms. After all, I’ve told you that tall rooms are the ones that seem the most glamorous, thanks to the atmosphere they create.
My article Bedroom curtains and drapes ideas talks more about this subject, so if you’re interested, you might want to check it out.
Anyway, I won’t insist on this step because we’ve already talked about it and I guess you got my point, so if it’s possible for you, choose long-hanging curtains instead of regular ones or simple hang your curtains higher than you would normally do.
6. Give up unnecessary stuff
Now that you have mainly arranged your bedroom, it’s important to know that some changes when it comes to useless things would be more than welcome.
The problem is that space is the number #1 ingredient for luxury, so a bedroom full of items will never look luxurious, no matter how expensive these items would be. Even though it may be heartbreaking to give up a memorial vase or a favorite book, all these items don’t belong in your luxurious bedroom.
A great tip when it comes to space is keeping the floor empty, or at least partially covered with a thick pile carpet, that would maintain the glamorous feeling.
In this way, the great visual appearance will start right from the floor and will continue to the top.
I really advise you to choose furniture pieces with legs, because they will look higher than the floor, and this will prevent it from feeling overcrowded.
Anyway, keeping your floor empty is really important for the elegance of your bedroom, so steel yourself and give up all those unnecessary thing your have in your bedroom. The result will totally worth it, I promise.
7. Thick piles and plush are a luxury statement
You will probably be a bit surprised to hear this, because thick piles and plush are pretty common in carpets and bed covers that don’t have an extremely high price.
But that’s exactly the great news, that you can find thick pile items almost everywhere, and the prices are very affordable. Many people wouldn’t even believe that plush and thick piles have something to do with luxury, but they actually have a lot to do with it.
Even some of the most luxurious hotels choose plush covers or thick pile carpets for their top rooms, thanks to the warm and charming atmosphere, that makes you feel just like home. But does this have anything to do with luxury?
It does, actually. Choosing thick piles and plush as the main materials for your carpet and bed cover would actually improve your bedroom’s luxurious feeling a lot. And it’s not just about this, it’s also about the cozy atmosphere they create, which is also important for a bedroom, even for a glamorous one.
Thick piles are also a trend for bedroom carpets this season, so if you want to read more about this, you can check my article Bedroom carpet trends for 2015/2016.
Summing things up, if you need an advice for your carpet or cover material, don’t ask twice and go for plush and thick pile, and you will get a really glamorous air in your bedroom.
8. Don’t forget about plants
Although you may not have expected it, plants are a necessary element of any luxurious decor, and your bedroom makes no exception.
Adding some plants will definitely improve your bedroom’s aspect when it comes to spontaneity and naturalness, because a room without plants looks boring, no matter how sophisticated furniture pieces it has.
The plants you choose don’t necessarily have to be very big and colorful. Smaller, green plants would actually be much better because they would make your room look even more natural.
For example, you can go for potted plants, hanging or even artificial ones, as long as they look natural and fresh, everything is just perfect…and luxurious. 🙂
However, don’t forget that there are certain limits for everything. There is a difference between an elegant room and a wild one, so make sure you don’t add a huge number of plants because you want a luxurious decor, not a jungle.
But I don’t think you’ll ever get there, so the point is to keep in mind that plants have their own part in a luxurious decor, so in case you ever have any room left, add a plant there. Even if it’s tiny and hardly visible, at least it’s a plant.
To sum up
It’s not hard to make your bedroom a glamorous room, especially if you know what exactly you have to do, and that’s what this post tries to do, give you some simple steps and help you understand how to make your bedroom luxurious.
Keep in mind that space is important for luxury, so choosing a light color and keeping the floor free of useless things will help a lot for the beginning.
