You dream about spending your summer evenings on a balcony, relaxing and watching people come and go? Well, I’m sure that your balcony’s lighting would be the last thing you worry about, am I right?
Lighting is definitely not one of the most important elements of a balcony, especially because many people spend time there mostly during the day. But there are a few small secrets that could help you make the best of this part of your apartment. So let me give you 3 suggestions that will show you how to light a balcony correctly.
1. Add a small pendant light as an illumination source
We’re talking about balcony here, so you should never think about adding a chandelier or a massive lighting fixture just because you want a lot of light in the evenings. Large lighting pieces are definitely not created for a balcony, therefore you should try to avoid them as much as possible.
So what should you get instead? If you want a lot of light and you can’t add a chandelier, what else could you get?
My first recommendation are pendant lights, but only those of smaller dimensions. Larger pendant lights tend to look like a mini-chandelier, which isn’t quite the best thing for your balcony…if you know what I mean. 😉
Try to pick a smaller pendant light and place it in that part of your balcony that you need most.
For example, if you like to watch the people going by, make sure the light illuminates the edges of your balcony, or the place where you usually stay.
On the other hand, if you have certain decorations on your balcony and you want them to be noticed, place the pendant light near them, so that at night they would also be visible.
And if you only need light in general on your balcony, the best choice would be to place the light somewhere in the middle. Because it’s a pendant light, it won’t seem too heavy for an outdoors decor, so your balcony’s aspect is safe.
2. Small LED lights can transform your balcony completely
I recently saw a video about adding LEDs on a balcony and I immediately fell in love with this method.
Basically all you have to do is to add small, simple LED lights in several places on your balcony, plug them all together (or separately if you want :P) and enjoy the fantastic view. Because it really is a fantastic view, once you finish the work.
This idea can be used by people who already have a main light on their balcony (like a pendant light) because these LEDs don’t have a very high illumination power so your balcony will remain normally illuminated.
But it is also a great idea for people who only want a spectacular decor on their balcony. It would manage to impress everyone, believe me. 😉
I will show you the video below, the balcony they decorated there is covered but you can easily use this method in regular balconies, that are “opened”. You can place the lights all around the balcony, and the result will be similar with the one from the video.
3. Candles make a simple but original decor
The last suggestion I want to give you for decorating a balcony is about those regular candles that everyone knows.
Candles can make a really cool decor on your balcony, once the’re added correctly. Now, there isn’t a certain rule you have to respect when placing the candles, but it’s important to make sure the light is distributed properly.
This means that you should place the candles at the same distance of one another, else you risk to have a certain part of your balcony over-lighted and another one improperly illuminated.
That’s not a difficult thing itself, so I believe you can use this suggestion on any kind of balcony, even if you don’t want to make too much of it. Simply place candles (any type of candles, I forgot to mention that :P) in different parts of your balcony and the result it will look absolutely magical. Just like you see in movies. 🙂
Lighting a balcony was never an easy job, especially because there aren’t certain rules you have to follow when choosing the right outdoor lights. However, these 3 suggestions that I presented in this post could be anytime a source of inspiration for you.
Whether you want a glamorous decor or not, adding a pendant lighting fixture could help a lot, as it would become the main source of light. It would be great if its dimensions were smaller, because we’re talking about a balcony, so the items should be rather simple.
Smaller LEDs are also a great idea, especially for people who want to have an impressive balcony. There are many ways to light a balcony using LEDs, some of them are more creative, others pretty simple, but they all have in common the amazing decor that results after all the work.
And not to forget, if you’re a fan of classic, simple decor, you can also follow this pattern when it comes to lighting. Candles can make miracles on a balcony, as long as they’re placed in the right spots. You don’t even need expensive candles, the regular ones could do just fine. They would manage to make your balcony a spectacular place.
These are my 3 suggestions about balcony lighting, so all I can hope is that they helped you understand how to light a balcony properly, in order to enjoy the long summer nights.
