If you’re interested in decorating your kitchen and you’re trying to make sure you won’t forget anything, then a backsplash is definitely one of the things you should keep it mind. And if you’re trying to find some modern kitchen backsplash ideas with pictures, you’ve come to the right place.
Cooking can be a very pleasant and relaxing hobby (or necessity, it depends :P), but what happens if all this enjoyable activity always ends up with a long session of cleaning up the stained walls? Well, I guess you won’t feel like cooking again very soon…
Trying to avoid this situation, a backsplash would be the best solution. For those of you who have no idea what this means, according to thefreedictionary.com a backsplash is “an upright surface or border, as of tile, that protects the wall against splashed liquids”.
In other words, it’s a tiled area applied to the wall behind your cooker, that will prevent it from getting any undesirable food or water splashes. And as far as I’m concerned, a backsplash is a necessary item in every kitchen, even if you’re not an amazing cook.
That’s why, I really suggest you to consider getting a backsplash (if you don’t have one already :D) because it could be of much help regarding every single activity from your kitchen. That’s why, here are 11 modern kitchen backsplash ideas with pictures that will help you understand what type of backsplash you want and how exactly you want it.
TYPES OF BACKSPLASHES
Backsplashes have long stopped being simple protection areas. Lately, when choosing a backsplash, people don’t just think about protection, but also about design and appearance. That’s why, a well chosen backsplash could easily improve your kitchen’s look. And if you’re a design lover, that’s definitely a thing you care about.
The good news is that you have a lot of options to choose from. Wood, tile, wallpaper and marble are just some of the materials you could use, but the good thing is that you’re able to choose whatever you want. Now let’s take them separately and find out the advantages and downsides of each backsplash material.
1. Tiled backsplash
Probably the most popular type of backsplash, tiles remain the easiest option for most of us, for several reasons: the multitude of products, the affordable price and the secure approach regarding design.
As far as I believe, there isn’t anything that could beat tiles when it comes to backsplash materials. At least, not in the next 10 years. They’re simply a too comfortable solution for this backsplash problem.
And their biggest advantage is that there are all the possible patterns you could ever imagine. Glass tiles, ceramic tiles, mosaic tiles, and the list could go on forever. But the point is that, once you choose a suitable tile type for your backsplash, it will have to both offer protection and look well, so pick the one you like carefully.
I know that theoretical parts may be boring most of the times and I also know that I promised you some pictures with backsplash ideas, so I won’t keep you any longer and I will show you these pictures straight away. They will definitely help you understand better all this theory, at least they did in my case. 🙂
This classic, ceramic tile backsplash is perfect for rustic kitchens with dark wooden furniture, as they manage to create a contrast with the other pieces and give a feeling of warmth, so important for a kitchen’s atmosphere.
A thing I didn’t mention before is that you could choose a patterned tile instead of a simple one, it will look much more interesting and it will also create a focal point right on your backsplash. If you pay attention to this picture, you’ll notice that the first thing that strikes the eye is the square from the middle and the ones surrounding it.
Whenever you want an elegant, catchy backsplash, go for stained glass. Though at first sight it probably seems like a patterned simple tile, if you look closely you’ll notice it’s high quality glass, painted in various types so that it looks like a normal tile.
However, you can’t deny that it looks really elegant and gracious. Regarding the dimensions, you could either go for an entire-wall backsplash (like in this picture) or for a smaller one, that would only cover the part behind the cooker. In my opinion, the first option would look much better, but it’s your choice.
Another option for your kitchen could be a glassy tiled backsplash, that would be the most appropriate choice for dark furniture pieces, like in the image above.
Except the fact that its shine make it a gorgeous tile, the material is also great because it doesn’t get stained very easy and if it does, cleaning it up shouldn’t be a very complicated work. And as you can see, it blends really well with the decor, this is why I consider it the perfect choice for modern kitchens.
If you want a minimalist or just a simply designed kitchen, a one-colored backsplash would be excellent for your room. If you look at this picture, you’ll see how well this red backsplash blends with this simple, modern furniture.
And it’s no surprise, whenever you want to give a feeling of modern and new, choosing only simple patterned furniture pieces and colors is the best start.
Coming back to the backsplash, because of the polished material this tile is made of, cleaning up would be quite easy. You should also keep in mind that shiny surfaces prevent water from getting in, so this won’t be one of your problems if you choose this tile.
2. Wooden backsplash
Though it may seem unusual when you first hear it, wood can be easily used as a backsplash material, you can see this by taking a look at the results. A wooden backsplash adds character to your kitchen, giving you the feeling of warmth and safety. It’s also perfect for a rustic kitchen. 😀
The good part about a wooden backsplash is that you can even create it by yourself, so it’s also a diy backsplash. I don’t really know how exactly you can do it, but there are a lot of videos and tips on the Internet that could help you.
However, if you want a wooden backsplash that’s already done, you still have many options. For the beginning, you can inspire from these pictures:
Though it’s not very common and very easy to find, a wooden backsplash looks very nice and charming, especially to those who love rustic style. And the good part is that you don’t even need much money, this picture is the best example.
The only thing you have to do is to put together similar or different planks of wood and nail them on the wall you want your backsplash to be. The planks can have similar dimensions or not, this depends on what you like, remember that anything would be good in this case.
That’s another impressive wooden backsplash idea, that takes away the monotony given by the lasting dark brown shade. So if your kitchen is similar to the one from our photo, and by this I mean that there is only one color everywhere, a light wooden backsplash is an excellent idea. It will make the room seem lighter but also more cheerful, and that’s exactly what you need.
3. Marble backsplash
If you’ve ever been searching information about backsplashes, one of the recommendations you might have heard is not choosing marble as a material because it can get stained easier than the others.
However, this isn’t always true. I’ve been having a marble backsplash in my kitchen for several years and I’ve never had this kind of problems. I admit that there were moments when it got stained, but this happens no matter what material you choose. Anyway, the stains weren’t impossible to clean, as you may have heard, on the contrary, I didn’t have to work too hard.
Now it’s true that I’m not the most skillful cook in the world, but I do use my kitchen for gastronomic purposes pretty often and I wouldn’t change my marble backsplash for anything else. Not to mention that it looks so good, probably the best from all the backsplash materials.
In case you’re interested, here is a marble backsplash picture:
A marble backsplash is perfect for a small, cosy kitchen, like the one from our picture. If you take a close look, you’ll notice that the marble covers a pretty big surface, the whole wall from the left and some of the wall from the right. This is a very good alternative you have, especially if you want to give the impression that the marble is actually your wall tile.
In this case, don’t forget to choose a marble color that is very similar to your wall’s color, because this will help you hide the spaces that are uncovered with marble. Take this picture as an example: if you don’t pay attention at the top corner, you won’t even see that the right wall isn’t covered in marble there.
4. Wallpaper backsplash
This is a very economic idea for everyone who wants to impress through a different backsplash style. There are a lot of backsplash wallpaper types, so you don’t have to worry about having a narrow range of choice.
On the contrary, you can choose whatever you want, but make sure it’s a resistant material, that will stand up to scrubbing if necessary. My recommendation would be to choose a vinyl wallpaper, because from what I’ve seen, these are the ones do their job best when it comes to protection and resistance.
Let me give you some ideas so that you can get it better:
This super vibrating wallpaper backsplash blends so well with the kitchen’s design and furniture that you would believe they were all created together. And that’s the definition of a well designed room. 😉
Though you may believe that there is no backsplash, just a double patterned wallpaper, if you look carefully you’ll notice that the chequered part is actually the protection surface and the superior part is the normal wall. Anyway, I think there’s no point saying how much I like this kitchen idea, you’ve already guessed it probably. 😀
We remain at the same bright colors pattern, and now we can take a look at this beautiful green wallpaper backsplash that, just like the one from the previous photo, blends extremely well with the other decorations.
There isn’t much to say here, except the fact that the backsplash’s dimensions are quite perfect in my opinion, I mean that’s how a backsplash should look like, as far as I’m concerned. I know it’s a matter of tastes, but I believe that a longer backsplash would not look like a backsplash anymore, so that’s why I prefer the smaller ones.
5. Stone backsplash
If you’re fan of nature and rustic style, then a stone backsplash in your kitchen is a must. It will bring a lot of character to your kitchen, making it unique, in the good way, obviously.
Now, when I hear the expression “stone backsplash” I tend to think about natural stone, not about marble or any other refined stone. It’s up to you how you choose to consider it, but I prefer to put stone and marble separately, at least when it comes to backsplash materials.
These being said, the best way to understand what I mean is by seeing some pictures of natural stone backsplashes, so take a look at this one:
Natural stone looks so chic and elegant, doesn’t it? It always appeared so to me…
Whether you have a rustic kitchen or a modern one, a stone backsplash would get on well with anything, transforming your decor into a flawless one. And here I’m not exaggerating. I’ve seen many houses with stone backsplash, and none of them has disappointed me.
Even if your furniture and decorations aren’t a big deal, a stone backsplash can totally change your kitchen’s appearance, keep this in mind. 🙂
Whether it is made of tiles, wood, marble, wallpaper or stone, having a backsplash in your kitchen is extremely useful because it could rid you of many hours of cleaning up the stained walls. So, if you don’t have a backsplash yet, get one!
